02/01/2003 Entry: "Bananas and war with Iraq"

Last weeks Revised Common Lectionary readings (amazingly, almost all Christian denominations are now working on the same readings every week) included this phrase from Jonah: '40 more days and Nineveh will be overturned.'. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria, and where's that? Correct! Iraq.

The PRCL mailing list, preachers from all over the world who regularly base their Sunday sermon or homily on the Lectionary have been looking, among other things, at this right-now connection to scripture. But I was struck by a news item from a week ago. 'In ten years, bananas could be extinct'.

Is there a connection? Probably not, but I was thinking that I'll probably be more inconvenienced by the demise of the banana than yet another conflict in the Middle East.

Then I heard about Columbia. (Also on the PRCL list.)

Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds--and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of
Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlight silence. Hovering there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace Where never lark,
or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the hand of God.
Pilot Officer John G. Magee

I don't think I'm going to cry about the bananas.
