03/11/2003 Entry: "Oooh, I dig them leather generals"

"WASHINGTON - Tommy Ray Franks doesn't have that West Point spit and polish. He grew up in Midland, Texas - same hometown as you-know-who - hunting quail and kicking up dust in an old black Chevelle."

What? No sunscreen? In Texas! Is he mad?

"He dropped out of school and joined the Army in 1967 - "to grow up" (his words). That he did, rising from private to four-star general."

Don't you have to have a degree to be an officer?

"Today, he's a 6 ft. 3 in. piece of rawhide who can both cuss out soldiers and serenade them with a little Garth Brooks."

Which is worse?

"He's also poised to lead 300,000 US troops in an invasion of Iraq."

That's the worst.

"You're not supposed to call him "commander in chief" of the US Central Command. That title's been abolished as aggrandizing, per the order of Donald Rumsfeld."

Probably this is not to detract from the title 'Supreme Exalted Crippled Islamic Country Squasher High Bah-boo Baboon" that bush will be using during the coming atrocity. Sigh.

"But tell that to the ranks. He may be the kind of general who got them to include that 'Chief,' in the first place."

The ranks have to believe in something to survive. That the coked-out, AWOL, drunk we have ruling from DC has turned them into cannon fodder is too horrible a thought to send them into battle with. It ought, however, be enough to turn them against the unelected fraud whichever way things go in Iraq. Killing and dying are only romantic in John Wanye movies and then not really even then.

"Truthfully, I would follow him anywhere," says an Army noncommissioned officer who has served under him

As it should be, too bad you're so badly led in DC.

The leathery general who may rule Baghdad, by Faye Bowers, Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor, March 11, 2003

I have to wonder what's going on at the CSM because this article reads like a flack, not a journalist, wrote it. Or, who knows? Maybe General Franks turned on that leather charm and she was swept away. Hm. Looks like the kind of guy you'd snag your stockings on.

Wonder what Powell and Schwarzkopf think of this guy. Links are welcome.
