Ronald Reagan was president. George Shultz was secretary of state. Lebanon was in turmoil. And Iraq and Iran were locked in a vicious war that had sharply curtailed the flow of oil out of Iraq." Okay, okay, it IS about oil. Not that it would have stopped anything, but it would have been nice to read this before the war. Thanks EV for the link.
Replies: 2 comments You are right, too, Ginger. It is not just about oil, but oil is clearly part of the equation. It is also about the dollar vs. the Euro; it is about profits for the military-industrial complex, with Iraq as a testing ground; it is about waving the flag to distract from domestic crises and political-corporate scandals that would de-rail, maybe jail, Bush & Co.; it is about the strange psychology of a strange little man who snivels that "Saddam tried to kill mah Daddie," and it is about the sinister folk and forces who stand behind him. I also think, in my less-than-humble (but very sad) opinion, that it is also about the "logical" outcome of a system that demands PROFITS at all cost, and costs be damned. If this Bush had not been around, another person like him would have come to the fore sooner or later. That's a terrifying thought, Ernesto, I hope we learn this lesson well and never have to learn it again. Well, I can hope, can't I? Posted by Ginger Mayerson @ 04/14/2003 09:49 PM PST
