04/28/2003 Entry: "Rankism, jerks, bullies, and former college presidents writing books about them"

"Look at two recent, egregious examples. One is the Catholic clergy. One we've hit on is Enron, where they feathered their own nests at everyone's expense, stole people's pensions. And they'll probably get off, just like all the guys who used to lynch blacks all got off. People are getting madder and madder about this, and they're blaming Bush."
The Somebody Mystique and the Rise of the Uppity Nobody, by Michelle Chihara, AlterNet, April 25, 2003

So, Robert Fuller has written a book to tell us that abusing using your power is bad and not abusing your power is good.

Of course he's right, but are we so fucked up we need a a $23.95 book by a guy with an advanced degree to tell us this? What next, is the Oceanographer of the Navy going to tell us the Pacific ocean is big?

I mean, top down abuse has always been around, go read Orcinus about it. But when you've worked in offices as long as I have, you see lots of petty tyrants and a few saints (nowadays, I work for the latter and work around the former), but jerks and bullies have always been with us.

I guess I'm glad Fuller is pointing this out, maybe there are people out there who've never run into people with authority problems. I can't imagine how, but I suppose it's possible. The solution is either blow or stand up for yourself, get fired and then blow. Or stand up for yourself, complain to the creep's manager, which will only piss the creep (and probably the manager) off, and then blow.

That we have a junta chock-a-block full of jerks and bullies running things in D.C. is alarming. However, since we can't complain to their boss (they don't have one we can find), we'll just have to vote them out of office in 2004. Now, not that they were voted into office and I can only hope they'll go quietly, but, aside from violence, what else can be done? We have the worst Congress in my memory and the peace movement did little more than point out how powerless, except for voting (524 more votes properly cast and counted in Florida and we wouldn't be in this mess), we US citizens really are when we have a bad government. (Why can't we have a Parliamentary system, why?)

So, yeah, I'm looking forward to the 2004 election, which will be NOT be like the 2002 election (just ask Robin Cook!). Maybe the UN can send observers to help Florida into Democracy.
