05/08/2003 Entry: "Stressing over Strauss (not the composers)"

"WASHINGTON - Is United States foreign policy being run by followers of an obscure German Jewish political philosopher whose views were elitist, amoral and hostile to democratic government? Suddenly, political Washington is abuzz about Leo Strauss, who arrived in the US in 1938 and taught at several major universities before his death in 1973."

*snip*

"Like Plato, Strauss taught that within societies, 'some are fit to lead, and others to be led', according to Drury. But, unlike Plato, who believed that leaders had to be people with such high moral standards that they could resist the temptations of power, Strauss thought that 'those who are fit to rule are those who realize there is no morality and that there is only one natural right, the right of the superior to rule over the inferior'."
Neocons dance a Strauss waltz, by Jim Lobe, Asia Times, May 8, 2003

". . . there is only one natural right, the right of the superior to rule over the inferior."

Um, excuse me, but isn't this exactly why Strauss and so many of his co-religionists had to leave Europe in 1938, not to mention all the ones who did not get out in time and were murdered by people who believed ". . .that there is only one natural right, the right of the superior to rule over the inferior."?

I've only just discovered Leo Strauss and so far I'm appalled. Give me Karl Jaspers any day. Let me just state for the record that only in the happy chaos of democracy is there room for a swingin' single, slightly cerebral chick like me. So, in the interest of self interest, I say let's apologize to the world for the past two years and go back to the democracy we had on December 11, 2000. Otherwise, it's to the barricades! And I just had my nails done.

I guess I'll go put on "Kind of Blue" and then "Sketches of Spain", read more Strauss and keep some Jaspers nearby as an antidote.

But, hey, Barbara Lee is still fighting the good fight, so I suppose all is not lost. Best of all, Barbara Lee is still alive.
