05/12/2003 Entry: "Fuck you and your poem, Mr. Collins."

Well, I did try to get over it, but nothing doin'. This has been bothering me since I read it on my lunch hour.

Billy Collins has a poem in this month's Poetry called "Geniuses". I think I can quote the part that's pissing me off under Fair Use. It is Collins, who obviously has nothing better to do, musing on swans, who are geniuses because they are. . . swans:

"Twenty-four geniuses in all,
for I numbered them as Yeats had done,
deployed upon the calm, crystalline surface -

"forty-eight if we count their still reflections,
or an even fifty if you want to toss in me
and the dog running up ahead,

"who were smart enough to be out
that morning - she sniffing the ground,
me with my head up in the light morning breeze."

As someone who works days, doesn't have or even want a dog and does not have time to count swans, even at night, because that's the only time I have to work on my own writing, I wish to say, most sincerely:

Fuck you and your poem, Mr. Collins.

Now that Poetry has that $100 Million from the Eli Lilly heiress, this type of poetry will swamp all others, simply because the journal has enough money to outlast all the other poetry journals. And I seriously doubt it would ever even occur to anyone at Poetry to take part of that money and give grants to smaller journals. That would be in the interest of poetry, not Poetry. Oh, and if Poetry is making grant to smaller journals, I'd like to hear about it. As you can see, I could use some good news.

I hope this mood passes soon, if I run out of arts to hate, I'll have to switch to sciences.
