Read all about it!"] 06/04/2003 Entry: "Lies and lies" Jon Carroll explains it all to you again: "The question before the table is not whether the war against Iraq was a good idea. The question is why the administration felt it necessary to lie so grandly and consistently about the reasons for the war, and why the media let those lies go largely unchallenged for so long. First, two quotes. The first is from Dick Cheney and was uttered on Aug. 26, 2002: "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction." The second is from Paul Wolfowitz, who with Cheney and Rumsfeld forms the ruling neocon triumvirate: "For bureaucratic reasons, we settled on one issue, weapons of mass destruction (as justification for invading Iraq), because it was the one reason everyone could agree on." That was from a Vanity Fair article published about two weeks ago. So, in essence, the administration decided that it wanted to go to war with Iraq, and it began inventing or hyping colorable reasons why that war would be a good idea." As he points out, the media by and large allowed this to happen. Tomorrow he's going to put forth some theories on why. I'm not sure I know why, except that the current administration is very, very good at intimidating the media, in subtle and blatant ways. The lies continue, of course. Double plus ungood.
