07/23/2003 Entry: "Comic-con 2003"

Comic-con in San Diego was HUGE. Huger than last year because they enlarged the exhibit hall even more. I read that it is six football fields and seems like everything Laurel and I wanted to see was at one end or the other. Except for the fabulous Molly Kiely in the Eros ghetto sort of in the middle of the hall. I mean, here Fantagraphics has the lovely, charming, extremely talented woman and they put her in a tent at the back. What a waste, really. What can they have been thinking? Also, I didn't recognize Eric Reynolds because last time I saw him was at Book Expo and he was wearing a sport coat and tie and had shaved. He looked very sharp. At Comic-con he looked less, um, debonair. Anyway, he was charming and claimed to remember me from Book Expo, which is very charming and might even be true.

I got to meet Roberta Gregory. I'd only seen her "Bitchy Bitch" strips, which scare me a little, but she was great to talk to. After four days of the con, she was just exhausted, but still drew an entire Bitchy Bitch in the comic I bought. That was so nice of her.

Donna Barr was next to her and I'm not sure how I've lived all my life and never knew about "Desert Peach". It's about Erwin Rommel's flaming fag younger brother. It's a scream and Donna Barr can really draw, just wonderful drawing. And very funny (oh, I said that). Too bad Donna does not have a webpage, but there was this at A Fine Line Press. Hm, I guess "Desert Peach" is very well known, but not to me, and when I discover something, I DISCOVER it. (Edit: www.stinz.com is her webpage.)

Anyway, this year I bought stuff and Laurel bought stuff, and our arms almost fell off carrying all this stuff and if VIZ hadn't been giving away tote bags, we'd be at the orthopedic surgeons already. God bless VIZ, whatever it is. Next year we will bring empty backpacks so we can shop in peace and comfort. Also, next year I will start shopping at 4 PM on Sunday when the discounts go through the roof.

We also feel the SD con center needs moving walkways. Molly's suggestion was rings hanging from a conveyer in the ceiling that one could grab and be hauled the length of the hall. I would use either of these conveyances if they existed.

I met some other people but am too tired tonight to go into it here. Had lots of good food, lots of sake at Nippon sushi bar, and later a big Gimlet (because a gal just can't get a Ramos Gin Fizz for nothing no more) at the Hotel del Coronado on Saturday night, which was fun. Did way too much walking, inside and outside, got mildly sunburned, but had lovely views of the bay and that wonderful SD weather they brag about so much. The train ride to SD was cool, but the train ride back was tense; lots of scolding from the conductors and whining from passengers about how crowded the train was. None of this bothered me and Laurel; we just read comic books and ignored it all.

So, anyway, I had fun and if I think of anything else, I'll blog it.
