First, Crowe is the only member of the cast who's known. Co-star Paul Bettany, who plays Dr. Stephen Maturin, is a fine actor (he also worked with Crowe in A Beautiful Mind) but largely unknown to audiences. What's more, the movie has no female characters and no romance. "'It will attract a male audience but we're hoping females will come too,' Weir says. 'Russell has a big female following. He's this big sex symbol. Women went to Gladiator and that was a male-oriented movie with no romance. Even if Captain Jack has no romance, we think women will come just to see Russell.'" It will depend on how slashy it is. "But the second time around, the storyline of O'Brian's 10th novel, The Far Side of the World" was blended in. 'If you take some of the character elements of Master and Commander and take some of the story elements of The Far Side of the World, you put them together and you get something really interesting - an adventure that has elements you won't see in any other movie.'" The Far Side of the World is probably the best of all the Aubrey and Maturin books. Much as I loved Witness, Peter Weir is the last guy in the world I'd think of directing a film like this. Eh, I'll probably so see it since I spent a winter obsessively reading my way through the sagas and deciding that The Far Side of the World was best.
