11/20/2003 Entry: "Michael Jackson Watch, Part 1"

"Sony instigated the Number Ones release, the last under Jacksonís contract, to recoup some money from him. But if the singerís money problems continue, he may be forced to sell his 50 per cent stake in the rights to 251 Beatles hits, which earn him £20 million a year. If Jackson cannot repay the Bank of America loan, default will trigger a handover to Sony of the catalogue of 251 Lennon and McCartney songs and 300,000 others that, since the first child sex allegations against him ten years ago, have been his main source of income."

This could be Paul's big chance to get the rights back. Anyone know who has the other 50% stake?

"Jackson is believed to spend $1 . 2 million each month, including the cost of running Neverland ($240,000 a month), limousine rentals ($195,000 a month) and the cost of keeping a personal staff of 120 at about $375,000 a month. Legal bills are certain to increase. This year he tried to sell the 3,000-acre Neverland ranch for $22.5 million, but withdrew the property from sale when estate agents said that it would fetch only $13.5 million. He bought the ranch in 1988 for $28 million and it costs $3 million a year to maintain."
Scandal could put Jackson on the scrapheap, Singer is $240m in debt and was banking on his compilation CD. By Nicholas Wapshott and Adam Sherwin, The Times, November 20, 2003

Is it just me or do these amounts seem incredible, outrageous and amazing?

I wish my name was Wapshott.

FYI: Dummies guide to Michael Jackson. Hm, some of this I knew.

Full disclosure: When I was in music school in, well, 1984, the "Thriller" album was the most perfect album ever. Mostly because the Quincy Jones arrangements completely rock, but also because everybody - the songwriters, the studio players, the techs - and Jackson did an incredible job. "Thriller" and the rest of the lp were played to death, but for its time and genre, it was just fucking brilliant. I don't care for this type of music and don't seek it out, but I certainly respect it when it's well done. And I'm in awe of Quincy Jones because he's AWESOME.
