12/14/2003 Entry: "Another reason not to use IE"

"A newly discovered security bug can let Internet scammers make phony sites that look even more authentic than usual in Internet Explorer for Windows: Instead of betraying their origin by showing the wrong address under IE's toolbar, phony sites can appear to have the same address as the real thing.

"This could eliminate one way for Web users to ensure they haven't been fooled by those Internet scams that invite you to "verify" your credit card information at sites that look awfully like eBay or another known, trusted company.

"The vulnerability was discovered by Sam Greenhalgh, an 18-year-old graphic designer in the United Kingdom, who has a demonstration of the trick at his Web site (www.zapthedingbat.com), in which he makes a page of his own appear to be located at the address "www.microsoft.com."

"'I was surprised how easily it was achieved, and equally surprised to discover just how hard it was to find somewhere to submit a security report to Microsoft,' he told The Post in an e-mail. Greenhalgh said he reported the discovery to Microsoft on Tuesday, but had not received a response by Friday.

"A spokesman said Microsoft is aware of the bug and might release a patch to fix the problem, although the company had said on Tuesday that it would hold any new security patches until next month."
