09/27/2004 Entry: "Oh! The Vole-manity!"

"Sperm competition is a familiar challenge for thousands of male animals. Many males from species as diverse as fruit flies, salmon and chimpanzees are locked in "sperm wars" with their rivals. Because females of these species mate with more than one male, each male's sperm must fight with a competitor's to fertilize a female's eggs."
"Sperm Wars": Voles Follow Their Noses to Win, by James Owen, National Geographic News, September 22, 2004

Anything to pass the genes on.

I saw "Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence" over the weekend and one of the many fine points the story made was the human need to replicate and recreate itself, whether that's a good idea or not. I guess voles have the same issues on a vole-ian level.

I highly recommend "Ghost in the Shell II: Innocence". I can't review it because I don't now enough about it, but I was just riveted for an hour and a half and that hasn't happened with any film in a long, long time.
