11/04/2004 Entry: "theocrats, bless their little hearts"

Still Missing the Big Picture About This Election, by galiel, dKos, Wed Nov 3rd, 2004 at 06:23:59 PST

There's a lot to read and think about in this post and in the comments on it, but what I've been reading around the blogs and am beginning to think myself is that I'm sick and tired of supporting Red-staters that hate me and everything I cherish. Like the Constitution, multiculturalism, and anyone or thing that doesn't fit in the kinder-küchen-kirche matrix (like me!).

As we know, Blue states get less back in taxes than we pay. This chart is a little dated, but you can see the Red states get more back from D.C. than they send. Here's a little more on the subject from me and Paul Krugman.

So, I've decided the Grover Nordquist might be right: do away with the Federal government and let the States work out their status as sovereign nations. I can't imagine how cool California would be if it was managing for its own benefit all that money we've been sending to D.C. Would I miss the Federal government? I suppose there are things the Feds do that I'm not aware of, but the state of California seems to keep the roads paved, the water flowing, and the lights burning just fine. And, yes, okay, we have an SNL skit for a Governor, but at least he's not the Church Lady (Full Disclosure: I didn't vote for the bastard). So I'm not sure how much of my life is really twined with the Feds. Aside from the IRS and my passport, not much. At the moment, my job is funded by an NIH grant, but it would take California five seconds to create a CIH to fund the same research. I mean, we just voted for $3B in grants to fund university and non-profit stem cell research, so we're pretty much there already. So, why do the rich, Blue states need the Fed? We don't; and as they say in El Serreno, living well is the best revenge.

I don't mind being my brother's keeper, but I'm sick of paying for the luxury of the Red states hating me. Enough already, let them starve. Let anyone motivated enough to get out, head for Blue states. This has happened before, I know this, I read Toni Morrison's Jazz and Maya Angelou's I know why the caged bird sings, so I know people are capable of leaving the South, for example. The one-bedroom apartment next to me is vacant if anyone wants to move to Los Angeles. Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it. I've lived in a few other cities and Almaty, Kazakhstan was a lot scarier than LA.

So, yes! Let the theocrats run their theocracies on whatever they can. I'm sick of them and I don't see any way they can be salvaged. At least not on my dime.
