11/16/2004 Entry: "US future in fiction (good think it's only fiction, hey?)"

I've been seeing blogs raving that we should all read A Handmaid's Tale because that's what's going to happen (!!!) and I think they're all wrong. I've always thought A Handmaid's Tale was farfetched because we're too violent for that to happen. I think Jack Womack's Random Acts of Senseless Violence, one of the most unsettling books I've ever read, is way closer to the mark of what might happen if things really go to hell in the US.

I mean, as William Gibson said of Random Acts of Senseless Violence: "If you dropped the characters from Neuromancer into Womack's Manhattan, they'd fall down screaming and have nervous breakdowns". And they would, too.

I like Jack Womack, his take on post-Soviet Russia in Let's Put the Future Behind Us was dead on, funny and scary. "Satirical romp", yeah, right.
