This is not just because the red states that voted for Mr Bush are growing faster than the blue states that voted for Mr Kerry. It is also because Mr Bush did well in the fast-growing suburbs and 'exurbs' in both red and blue states. Mr Bush's triumph in greater Phoenix, greater Houston and greater Atlanta was perhaps predictable. But Mr Kotkin points out that he also triumphed in what he calls the 'third California': the vast inland region that is producing the bulk of the state's growth at the moment." What "third California" producing the bulk of the state's growth? What kind of growth? I spoke to my co-worker who lives in San Bernardino and he says there's lots of new building and manufacturing out there, so maybe old Lex means that, because I hadn't heard SF, LA, SD, the IT and biotech enclaves had gone out of business. You know, I used to read the European edition of The Economist in the 90s and it was a good news magazine in those days. I can't stand the U.S. edition. I mean, Lexington is always Lexington, but the whole U.S. edition lurches way too far right for me. EDIT: Oh, that Third California.
