05/13/2005 Entry: "Krugman NYT 20051305"

"The attack on the safety net is motivated by ideology, not popular demand. The public isn't taken with the vision of an 'ownership society'; it seems to want more, not less, social insurance. According to a poll cited in a recent Business Week article titled 'Safety Net Nation,' 67 percent of Americans think we should guarantee health care to all citizens; just 27 percent disagree."
Always Low Wages. Always., by Paul Krugman, NYT Op/Ed, May 13, 2005

The "slave-ownership society" vision is sick but not a mystery. It's easier to despise people than try to understand them, and understanding is so 910.

What I'm wondering is the when and the how of the push-back, because since when has the American worker taken getting fucked over lying down? Or have American workers always been like this, but they were blessed with wise and compassionate leaders like FDR (except for the interment) and LBJ (except for Vietnam)?
