05/19/2005 Entry: "Communication WTF? One Woman's Story"

This post is dedicated to fucking Cingular and fucking SBC, but it's really about fucking AT&T.

Cel phones: Meh, I don't need to talk to anyone so much I need a cel phone. Then, one night as I was running J LHLS errands to Kinkos in Glendale, and I notice the dearth of payphones. Now, I have Auto Club because I drove air-cooled VWs for many many many many far far far too many years and, folks, ya gotta have Auto Club when you drive air-cooled VWs. And I've used AAA for other cars, because flat tires happen to everything. So, I'm covered, ha-ha-ha, but only if I can make the call, ha-ha-ha.

My solution: Prepaid cel service and a year ago AT&T had the best deal. Now, everyone I tell my sad story to thinks pre-paid cel minutes last forever. Alas, we live in a capitalist society. But AT&T was on the job: I could get 40 prepaid minutes (coming and going) for $10 and they lasted for 90 days! Yay! Cel service (that I never use, but might need someday) for $40/year! Yay!

Enter fucking Cingular: Minimum for 90 days jumps to $25. Fuck. I despair, but I shell out.

(and take a small break to drink some of this yummilicious coffee. damn I make good coffee. yet another reason to never leave my pad. where was I?)

Landlines: Okay, when I moved to Lincoln Heights in 2003, AT&T and SBC were both on the scene for local service. I'm sentimental and they had a better deal on two landlines, so I went with AT&T. (yes, I DO do all this on a 56K modem, thank you very much) As we know fucking SBC recently ate AT&T. In December 2004, I foolishly tried to add the Inside Wire Maintenance or whatever it is to the line that was not working. I never got that, but suddenly, I was being charged for things I never asked for. My service for two lines went from about $35/month to $60, $70, $80!!!/month. WTF? I was also in customer service hell. And trapped like a rat!!! AT&T/SBC customer service will tell you ANYTHING and do NOTHING unless you follow-up with at least THREE calls about it. This reminded me in a bad way of working in the former Soviet Union, however, that is another story. So I was in customer service hell. But not for long, I gets a brainstorm that will solve 50% of my problem and make me feeeeeel better.

I checked on BuyBlue.org and ChooseTheBlue.com and lo and behold, what do I find? Only Working Assets (God love 'em) is Blue. All the other are, including fucking Cingular, are very Red. As you can imagine, this surprised me, but not as much as it once might have. Red = You are so screwed, sucker. It's just the way the way we live now.

Working Assets wireless: They were or are having a super deal so on the $30/month + tax plan, I could get a free phone, free activation, free shipping, and some other free goodies. I also get 250 primetime minutes included and unlimited other minutes. And some other stuff that I'm too lazy to look up. You can look it up if you really want to know. www.WorkingAsssetsWireless.com yay!

So I'm getting rid of one of my landlines and just using cel for everything. I'll still have the modem and fax line, so if, for some incredible reason I ever need a landline at home for a voice call, I can do it. In my book, this is a two-fer.

Hey, our Blue votes might not count for much nowadays, but money still talks.

Postscript: Of course they disconnected the wrong land line, so that was just one more day of bad service with SBC and par for the course. I'm half free now, and it feels great.
