05/25/2006 Entry: "No breastfeeding icons on LiveJournal"

"As you are aware, on Friday we sent out a request to a member of this community asking her to remove her default user picture because it was found to be in violation of our standard restrictions for default userpics after being reported by a fellow LJ user."

~snip~

"That being said, wed like to sincerely apologize for the following:

"The lack of sensitivity our procedures appeared to show toward the right for women to breastfeed their children.

"The confusion and perception that LiveJournal and/or Six Apart is against mothers who choose to breastfeed their children.

"The impression that we simply were not willing to listen, when in fact we are.

"The lack of clarity on the policies, which was possibly made worse when we updated our FAQ on Saturday. We updated the FAQ to clarify our policy, not to change it in response to this specific situation."
Response from Six Apart and Even more charm from Six Apart, May 24, 2006

Breastfeeding in public? The high and mighty SixApart is freaked out by breastfeeding in public? WTF? No, no, wait, they're freaked out by little bitty pictures of babies at a breasts (one to a customer), specifically freaked out by the nipple part of the breast part of the picture. It violates their nudity and obscenity rules. Honestly. WTF? I wonder what the offending user pic was. I mean, I don't especially like kids, but even I don't mind breastfeeding moms in public. At least the kids are fairly quiet during it.

Edit later that night: And then I was sucked into the comments vortex.

Edit 060406: So, now there's a one-day strike on June 6. Step Apart from Six Apart. For me, it's bigger than boobs and breastfeeding. I'd at least like Six Apart to understand the serious misogyny in their position in this matter. If they can, they all seem pretty obtuse over there.

Edit 062606: Please note the kind of creepy letters decent JL users get from LJ Abuse. Mena? Are you out there? Why aren't you defending your sisters? Hm?
