06/16/2006 Entry: "Why I no longer shop at Vromans"

What Are Independent Bookstores Really Good For? Not much, by Tyler Cowen, Salon, May 15, 2006

I used to think that indy bookstores had pleasant clerks, but Vromans in Pasadena has proved me wrong on that score.

There was also the guilt factor. It's much easier for me to buy books online than schlep up to Vromans, until one night...

One terrible night a few months ago, during a terrible rainstorm in which I was obviously soaked, no clerk in Vormans had the humanity to give me a plastic bag, just a simple plastic bag, when I practically begged for one to salvage the stuff, like my cell phone, in my soaked canvas tote bag. I had to buy something to get any kind of bag. So I did, got said bag, and then returned the item for my money back.

I even wrote to the store manager to complain about this shocking experience, but never got an answer. So, I've never set foot in the place again and I'm perfectly happy about it. No guilt whatsoever. Borders, Powells, Tower, Bungalow News, upper Brand Blvd in Glendale are all getting my business.

Really, Vromans, was it worth losing a customer over a plastic bag?
