06/22/2006 Entry: "Earthquakes vs. the 101 Freeway: which one is likely to kill you first?"

"Fialko thinks the big event -- easily causing an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 -- will happen within the next ten years. If there's any consolation for us Angelenos, it sounds like Palm Springs and the Inland Empire (sorry, San Bernardinos) will be hit hardest. But you still wonder how bad of a hit L.A. will take."

Dude, an 8.0 in Palm Springs would kick our LA ass. Don't you read Mike Davis?

"We managed to spring back relatively quickly from 1994's Northridge quake; by the time I moved here in 1996, it already seemed like ancient history (except for those who were hit hardest, of course). But this would be a much, much bigger seismic event. "
Time to Take a Second Look at Earthquake Insurance?, Franklin Ave Blog, June 21, 2006.

Yeah, and Clinton was president. I think Mike Davis's "Ecology of Fear" would be wonderful and entertaining and somewhat terrifying background reading on the earthquake thing. Pete Wilson was as evil during that event as he ever was during his accursed terms as governor.

Oh, and as far as worrying about earthquakes: I drive on the freeway, I don't worry about anything. Risk is an interesting thing, people are more willing to take and make peace with a risk they think they understand (freeways) vs. a risk they don't understand (earthquakes, fires, etc.).

Edit: Oh, and here's something else I don't worry about: 'End Times' Religious Groups Want Apocalypse Soon. I'm more worried about getting to work on time than end times, except quittin' time.
