"Gonzales' legal justifications of the spy program are similarly preposterous, proving only something else we already knew: that for a fancy title and an office filled with expensive leather furniture, you can find a shyster to argue damn near anything. They practically had to tear White House mouthpieces off Richard Nixon's leg before he embarked upon that helicopter ride into the sunset."
"In essence, the Bush White House pretends that the congressional resolution giving the president the authority to use force against the perpetrators of 9/11 enables him to set aside any laws he deems inconvenient and to put the U.S. Constitution on indefinite hold. Or that even if Congress intended no such thing, the president’s powers as commander-in-chief trump the Bill of Rights anyway. It’s as tortuous and inside-out an argument as it’s possible to imagine, to all intents and purposes establishing the president as an elected military dictator."
Will the real conservatives please stand up? by Gene Lyons, February 15, 2006
Gene Lyons nails it yet again.
Isn't the top lawyer in the land supposed to protect the people from lawbreakers, in and out of the government? This might sound corny, but the bush junta (those in it like Gonzales who might be capable of understanding this) really needs to remember whom they work for.

My favorite webcomic, Pibgorn, switched to a M-W-F schedule and started a new story arc this past Monday. All I can say is it's a good thing Shakespeare is in the public domain, especially Act one, Scene one of "Midsummer Night's Dream."

Um, it's 9:30ish here in LA and the bidding is at $28,201.51 and there's still over 5 days to go. A-mazing and for a good cause, too.

"Harry Whittington is likely to bear the marks for life The lawyer shot by US Vice-President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has suffered a minor heart attack, a Texas hospital spokesman has said. He said Harry Whittington, 78, suffered a heartbeat irregularity caused by a pellet lodged in his heart. Mr Whittington was moved back into intensive care on Tuesday and will be treated for at least another week."
Man Cheney shot has heart attack, BBC, February 14, 2006
So, excuse me, my positive thoughts to Mr. Whittington and his family, but if he dies, does that make it Manslaughter or 2nd degree murder for Cheney? IT SHOULD. Because it not, I don't know what country we're living in anymore.

"Our churches tend to foster unrealistic, idealized conceptions of conjugal life as a fairy tale full of romance and unlimited sex without guilt. Many young churchgoers acquire the strange notion that life actually does not begin at conception, but rather, at marriage; until they walk down that aisle and say 'I do,' they’re stuck in limbo just waiting for real life to happen."

"Where would the Bush administration be without terrorism?
Ain't that the stone cold truth.
"Like the Cold War before it, the "war on terror" is a conveniently sweeping rationale for all manner of irrational governance, such as the outrageous $2.77-trillion budget the president proposed to Congress on Monday."
